ABOUT THE ARTIST Yair Alain Cohen, 24, was born on the Ivory Coast. He came to Israel in 1984, with the return of his parents to Israel after a term as commercial representatives. Mr. Cohen attended the Mousrara School of Photography and Imagery in Jerusalem from 2000-2003. While still a student, he participated in several group exhibitions: “Bedouins of the Negev”, at the Museum of the Land of Israel, Tel Aviv, in 2002; “The Ethiopian Christian Community,” at the Tel Aviv Cinemateque, in 2002; and in the framework of his Final Project at the Mousrara School of Photography and Imagery, he exhibited at the Mahtaroth Museum in Jerusalem in 2003. In March, 2004, Mr. Cohen took part in the exhibit “Exemplary Leadership Project: Utopia”, at the Azrieli Towers in Tel Aviv, together with 120 outstanding artists representing the various sectors of the population of Israel. In April, 2004, he presented his exhibit “Sham – Mayim” (“Sky – Water”), also at the Azrieli Towers. On the Technique of “Sky – Water”: Yair Cohen uses a macro lens to achieve an effect which makes the observer aware of natural phenomena resulting from interaction among different materials. Natural elements are combined and become new creations, as natural processes occur over time. The artist designs minature landscapes, creating his own new world. He sees his role as one of documenting and perpetuating the small moments of grace and magic that G-d and nature have provided. The final work displayed is the result of careful observation and clarification, a process of several years’ duration – not of photography per se but of the artist’s own observation and reflection of life. The photographs exhibited in “Sky – Water” were developed and printed without any use of a computer.
